Youth Swim Lessons

Rancho Family YMCA Youth Swim Lessons

Youth Swim Lessons are open to all children, ages 6-13. Classes are progressive, 45 minutes in length and taught year round. View descriptions of our 5 distinct skill levels to find the class best suited to your child's ability. See descriptions and schedules below.


Polliwog (Beginner)

Requirements : No prior swimming experience.
Basic Class Curriculum: Water adjustment, front/back stroke, front/back float, putting face in water and breath control. Instructor to student ratio 1:6.

Guppy

Requirements : Must be able to swim independently for 5 feet on back & on front with face in the water & float on back independently.
Basic Class Curriculum: Freestyle (front stroke), Backstroke, Sidestroke, introduction to Breaststroke and front/back float. Instructor to student ratio 1:6.

Guppy Advanced

Requirements : Must be able to swim independently for 15 feet for Freestyle and Backstroke and float on back independently. And have an understanding of breaststroke and sidestroke.
Basic Class Curriculum: Freestyle with side breathing, Backstroke, Sidestroke, Breaststroke, front/back float, deep water orientation and build endurance. Instructor to student ratio 1:6.

Minnow (Intermediate)

Requirements : Must be able to swim independently for 25 yards for Freestyle with side breathing, Backstroke without stopping, Breaststroke and Sidestroke.
Basic Class Curriculum: Freestyle with side breathing(rhythmic breathing), Backstroke, Sidestroke, Breaststroke, diving and build endurance.

Fish (Intermediate/Advanced)

Requirements : Must be able to swim independently for 50 yards for Freestyle with side breathing and Backstroke, Breaststroke correctly without stopping, and Sidestroke.
Basic Class Curriculum: Freestyle with side breathing(rhythmic breathing), Backstroke, Sidestroke with scissor kick, Breaststroke, Butterfly diving and build endurance. Instructor to student ratio 1:10.

Fly Fish (Advanced)

Requirements : Must be able to swim independently for 75 yards for Freestyle with side breathing, Backstroke, Breaststroke correctly without stopping all, and Sidestroke with appropriate turns. Must also be able to do 15 yards of Butterfly.
Basic Class Curriculum: Freestyle with side breathing(rhythmic breathing), Backstroke, Sidestroke with scissor kick, Breaststroke, Butterfly diving and build endurance. Instructor to student ratio 1:10.

Shark (Teamwork/Safety) NEW!

Requirements : Must be able to swim independently for 50 yards for Freestyle with side breathing and Backstroke and Breaststroke correctly without stopping. A new alternative to those swimmers who have passed Minnow level.
Basic Class Curriculum: NEW Shark swim level will focus on personal safety and rescue skills, endurance building through games and drills and personal growth through teamwork and goal setting. Instructor to student ratio 1:8.
